The excitement surrounding the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 in India might tinged with a hint of uncertainty as reports suggest that the schedule could once again undergo revisions, this time due to security apprehensions raised by the local police.
Media reports have indicated that the matches slated for October 9 between New Zealand and the Netherlands, as well as the October 10 clash between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at Uppal, are potentially facing rescheduling. The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) has taken the proactive step of approaching the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with a request to rework the schedule for these two consecutive matches. The trigger behind this move stems from concerns raised by the local police regarding the viability of ensuring adequate security measures for back-to-back matches.
In light of these security concerns, the Hyderabad Police have intimated that they would need to deploy around 3,000 personnel for a single game, with additional forces stationed at the hotel housing the Pakistan team. The exigencies of such security arrangements have compelled the HCA to push for modifications in the schedule.
Interestingly, the Pakistan-Sri Lanka match, initially slated for October 12, underwent a previous rescheduling to allow Pakistan more recovery time between fixtures, specifically after their showdown against India on October 14. Notably, the Pakistan-India clash itself has rescheduled due to a conflict with the commencement of Navratri, a festival marked by extensive participation in Gujarat.
It’s worth highlighting that earlier this month, a reshuffling of nine World Cup matches took place without prior consultation with the HCA, which has led to their formal submission of a request for changes to the altered schedule.
With the commencement of ticket sales set for August 25, the final call on whether the BCCI will endorse the HCA’s proposal for further adjustments to the already modified schedule remains shrouded in uncertainty. As cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the pinnacle event, the unfolding narrative of scheduling adaptations underscores the intricate balance between logistical considerations and ensuring a secure and seamless tournament experience.
